Since publishing Beneath the Surface of Words almost two years ago, I’ve continued to give talks, work with educators, and develop my own understanding of the ideas that are presented in the book. One particular topic comes up repeatedly, and I’ve written a bonus chapter to discuss it.
If you have my book, I suggest that you wait to read the bonus chapter until after you’ve finished reading through at least chapter 7 in the published book, because the bonus chapter builds on the ideas presented in those first sections.
However, if you can’t wait (or don’t have the book), that’s fine, too. You will almost certainly end up with questions about some of what’s discussed in the bonus chapter, but I hope those questions will motivate you to learn more about the morphological framework of written words. This knowledge is essential if you want to understand English spelling, particularly if you are working to help students become fully literate.
